Why are we afraid of our own identity?
Why are we so afraid of owning up to who we are, and where we are in our lives?
Westerners have this idea that they need to be something they’re not, someone better, someone prettier, someone richer, someone more sophisticated, someone more educated….
We always seem to focus on lack, and on things we are missing out on. We focus on the things we don’t want rather than the things we do want.
As for me, identity didn’t come easily.
I know who I wasn’t. but who was the real me?
Who was I?
What did I like?
Who did I want to be around?
And what were the most important values of mine?
With a few years of non stop personal development under my belt, I strived to be the best version of myself, but lacked on pin pointing my true weakness… identity.
How was I going to figure that out?
(I realise now why people have a midlife crises. They all try and please everyone without ever really knowing who they are).
We’re so busy going through the motion, building an empire, working out and posting it on social media, but do we truly sit down a reflect on the person we have become?
Do we truly sit down with ourselves and get to know our likes? Our passions?
Do you truly know the person who’s looking back at you in the mirror in the morning?
And can you say you truly love her/him?
As a female, living in a ego driven world, it’s very hard to accept who we are. We want to be smaller, we want tot be fitter, healthier, richer, happier… and we dwell on what we are not.
Identity is a huge problem in our society, I mean, there’s a reason why millennials have an average of 12 jobs in their lifetime.
As we grow older, we soon come to realisation that our education system doesn’t show us how to love ourselves, and it doesn’t show us who we truly are, and how we could contribute to society, how we could help the world to be a better place.
I studied Biomedical science because I was a good biology student, does that mean that because I was good, I needed to take that path? NO, I hated my program… I never followed what my true soul/heart was screaming at me. Go do anthropology and psychology, you’ll love that! It’s who you are, you are meant to help people, how they think, how they grow and have a hand in who they will become. “There’s no jobs in anthropology. why would you do that?
Most of the anxiety in the world today is due to exactly that, not following our soul’s calling or following what we truly want. We follow what we think we should do, what our families want or what society is telling us to want. We are not following our passions, we worry about things we can’t control and we are stuck on social media dreaming about being someone else. We don’t actually sit down and reflect on our emotions, our wants or our calling. To be at our happiest, we need to know who we are and listen to ourselves!
Now it’s time to make a change in your life, and learn about YOU because if you don’t the Universe will force you to do it anyways.
• Take the steps necessary to feel at peace with yourself, body mind and soul.
• Learn how to be honest with yourself.
• Pay attention to your inner voice.
• Stick to your core values.
• Create some boundaries.
Those are the first steps to figuring out who you are, and what you want… and like magic, you’re life will change for the better.
